BlueRibbon Coalition will be represented by Del & Stacie Albright at “Winter on the Rocks” (WOTR) put on by the Utah 4x4 Club and Canyon Country 4x4 Club. BRC works closely with these clubs and others, as well as the Utah 4Wheel Drive Association. We are proud and honored to be part of this year’s activities and look forward to seeing a lot of familiar faces. Of course, we are all about saving trails and keeping the sport alive, so if you spend time jaw-jacking with us, you can figure that will be the topic of choice.

WOTR will be the first stop of our Trail Access Partnership Tour (TAPT) II. TAP Tours are where businesses join us on landuse adventures bringing off-road businesses together with customers, all in the spirit of saving trails and keep backcountry motorsports alive. We have to make changes at the highest levels in order to keep our freedoms alive and well in the backcountry.

The Land Use Land Cruiser Gets Some Trail Time!

Elsie, the Land Use Land Cruiser has had a busy summer! First she landed down at Trail-Gear for some mods including custom front and rear bumpers and sliders, an ARB 2.5 inch tuned suspension and a brand new WARN winch.

We were so excited to pick her up and get her out and about on her first trek on the Pardoe Trail in N. CA. What a great trail that is and a great place to test out some new mods for the moderately built rig.

We were amazed at the awesome flower bloom throughout the trail.

We took a short video of Elsie on a small rock pile, she looks great and I sure did use the sliders!

The Land Use Land Cruiser Is Growing Up!

Thanks to Trail-Gear, my "Elsie", the Land Use Land Cruiser is getting a much needed transformation. Several businesses have stepped up already and contributed to the build.

We dropped Elise off in the good hands of the R&D race crew and told them to "have at it" and we're anxious to watch the transformation take place.

ARB sent over a 2.5 inch tuned suspension lift, a WARN winch is going to sit on top of Trail-Gear's custom built front bumper with sliders and a back bumper to follow.

Next on the list will be the bumpers front and rear plus rock sliders. Can't wait to see the results!

1st Annual King of the Hammers "Team Challenge"

Don't miss out on the 1st Annual King of the Hammers "Team Challenge" held on Wednesday night at 6 in Hammer Town. This is going to be a lot of fun to watch and for the teams to participate in. There's going to be awesome prizes and lots of swag for the crowd!

Picture this, five totally prepared rigs and five hot chicks for judges and an emcee calling out items on the secret list; the first team member to hand off the item to the judge gets a point so speed is key! Time is running out so get a team together and sign up. Here's more details:

5 teams (at least) will be selected to participate. 4x4’s and Side-x-Side (UTV) rigs are welcome. Any team of up to four (4) folks can compete. It’s all for fun and a little fame, with a cool trophy from Raceline Wheels for the winning team. Also, several businesses have stepped up to provide swag, goodies, and freebies to participants and the audience.

HOW it WORKS: Put together a Team of your friends or club members who can be at the event on Wednesday Feb. 8th in time to compete at 6pm. This is a treasure hunt for goodies used on a trail ride. No driving necessary. Rigs will be parked.

Team Challenge Details:

Wednesday night Feb. 9th at 6 pm, Main Stage, Hammer Town.

It will be a TEAM challenge and not just a CLUB challenge. However clubs can be a team. 4 folks max per rig; best prepared trail type rig; treasure hunt of things IN and ON the vehicle. Good lookin' chicks for judges (and a few old guys). In front of the crowd.

LUCKY PARTICIPANTS WILL BE DRAWN (and notified) Tuesday night Feb. 8th at 6 pm during the Land Use Workshop hosted by Del Albright.

Team Challenge participants will be posted in the KOH main booth.

Team Challenge rigs must be near the stage by 5:30pm, Wed. Feb. 9th, and checked in with John Stewart, Cal4 Resource Consultant.

Ok, there have to be rules, so here they are:

No trailers; items must be in or on the vehicle the whole time. You have to dig for everything.

All participants must be in a safe condition to play the game.

Fastest time to the judges with the proper item AS described by the emcee; it’s important to retrieve exactly what is called out.

No dangerous things like large metal objects or spare tires will be asked for. Safety briefing will precede Challenge.

Non-street legal as well as street legal rigs are ok, INCLUDING UTV’s (sidexside).

How to APPLY:

Apply online/email by sending the following information to del@delalbright.com; or bring the info filled out hard copy to KOH and hand it in at the KOH Merchandise Booth, or to the Raceline Wheels booth, or bring it to the Land Use Seminar Tuesday. All applications must be in before the Land Use Seminar Tuesday night, 6pm – that is when we’ll draw the participants.

Hump N Bump 2010

The Hump N Bump event proved to be a great success this year and had a huge turn out. We filled the fairgrounds in Logandale NV to capacity with trailers and motorhomes and 4 wheelers from every shape and size

The organizers of the event decided to add a whole new compenent to the Saturday night festivities by holding a car crush. What fun that was to watch and heckle. Even some of the locals showed up to watch the carnage on the junk yard cars.

I was feeling just a little nervous here but no worries we walked right over the pile!

Prior to the car crush there was an awesome barbeque with melt in your mouth ribs and other goodies that stuck to your ribs!

Proceeds from the event go to land use organization that help keep the trail systems open in the area. The wonderful Vegas Valley 4 Wheelers put on a great show. http://www.vv4w.org/

CalROCS Season Finale Leaves The Crowds Happy.

CalROCS 2010 championship proved to be more than exciting with all the teams fighting to keep up the points and standings throughout the whole weekend and the crowds that showed up to see the carnage were impressed.

Teams from as far as Canada and Virginia came out to test their skills and try their luck at the season finale at the beautiful Donner Ski Ranch in sunny California.

Justin Hall from Team Rockhard showed up in his new Unlimited Class buggy and showed off his driving skills while his dad took on the challenge of hopping around the course spotting his son on some amazing drops and crevices that were a part of the bonus lines.

Good job Justin for taking first place in the Unlimited Class! A great win considering it was only his third time driving the new rig.

A Close Call On The Freeway!

The event Sierra Trek held at Meadow Lake near Truckee CA was awesome! After packing everything up and making our way down the hill we ran into trouble. The trailer hitch broke off somehow when we were doing about 65 down I-80. I just happened to look in the rear view mirror to see something shiny bounce down the freeway and almost hit the semi truck that was following us. It didn’t register in my head what could have come out of the trailer that was shiny like chrome. I was just about to say “pull over” when the trailer came off the Jeep and swung around to the driver side and into the traffic on the side of us. The safety chain held and before I knew it the Jeep swung hard to the right hand side of the freeway, luckily there was a big emergency lane and then a wide shoulder area. We hit the dirt, went up the bank slightly and couldn’t stop; we lost control and started spinning down the freeway.

We couldn’t see anything but a big dust cloud that we kept rotating through. We got pelted with pebbles and waves of dirt. I thought for sure we were going to get rammed by the semi truck as all I could hear was the screeching of brakes and skidding on the pavement, it was a really ugly sound. All I could do was hold on and wait for the hit. We had no idea where we were stopped as the dust and dirt hung in the air for what seemed like forever. Finally I realized we were on the right shoulder. We did two full turns and ended up facing traffic when we finally got stopped. I didn’t worry about rolling so much as I did by the thought of getting plowed by the semi truck! I would have taken a direct hit.

Amazingly the Jeep stayed upright but the trailer ended up jackknifed on its side and stuck up under the back bumper. I thought for sure that all the stuff in the trailer was going to be all over the freeway and even if that were the case I really didn’t care. The only thing that came out of the trailer was the five gallon water can! That was a heck of a pack job!

The truck pulled over with one other car and they came running up to see if we were okay. The truck driver was amazed that we didn’t get killed as he watched the whole thing happening. He gave Del and I a high five and told Del he had amazing driving skills to have kept us upright and out of the main traffic which is what saved our lives. The CHP finally showed up about a half an hour later and I overheard one say “I see we have a lucky one here”.

Some acquaintances from another club were coming down the highway returning from the same event we were at and immediately pulled in to help get the trailer upright. They just happened to have a spare tow bar for a trailer and stripped the old bent parts off and replaced them with their stuff. They even had a spare ball hitch but it was too small so we broke out the on board Ready Welder and they put a weld inside the hitch to make it fit and viola we were on our way within about 45 mins. They even took the time to pull over with us at the next exit to check if everything was working okay with the “trail fix” that they did. The off road community is really a great network of people that go over and beyond the call of duty to help a friend or acquaintance in need.

We were both covered in dirt and dust in places that I’m not sure how it even got there and we later discovered there were pebbles in our seats from all the debris flying through the air when we were spinning through the dirt. Whew, that was a close call and we were very, very lucky. It was also a reminder to check your vehicle and equipment before hitting the road.

Xtreme Outlaws Motor Sports Event

The Grand Sierra hotel in Sparks NV really knows how to put on a show! Kicking off the event was a pre run of the 250 mile race course that winds through the desert on some pretty harsh back roads that seem to be forgotten. I was treated to some spectacular views and some pretty knarly wheelin in my old Toyota Land Cruiser that proved once again that she is very capable.

There is also a motocross event that looks pretty darn exciting and a huge course has been built right here at the hotel so the entertainment is literally steps away. The pool parties have been awesome, the food is great and the atmosphere has been lively.

I've had the opportunity to meet several key people in our off road world and of course spreading the word about the BlueRibbon Coalition and the need to keep our public lands open so that we can go and recreate responsibly.

Being a slow poke, this buggy whizzed right by me when he had the chance.

Besides a snake, jack rabbit and plenty of lizards I ran into some other company on the course.

The Nukizer at Jeep Safari

The minute I laid eyes on this Jeep, I was in love! The Nukizer has got to be one of the hottest things I have seen out in Moab, and believe me there are a lot of phenominal rigs at Easter Jeep Safari!

We got the invite to come out to the photo shoot of this and other new rigs from Chrysler and we didn't think twice about it!

Here are some pictures to drool over. Caution! Mouth watering, hand and foot twitching may start to begin!

Farmington, NM: Glad Run; Choke Cherry: Glade Run Recreation Area contains many serious 4x4 areas, including Choke Cherry, and it's Loren Healy's backyard (Loren is the Current King of the Hammers). The BLM came up with two plans for the area that would mark trails and put existing ones on the map. Now they are coming up with Alternative maps that do not make much sense and do not match up with what the locals think should be done. We need LETTERS from you, please.

4Wheel Parts March Madness sale and open house

I had a great time at the 4Wheel Parts March Madness sale at their Sacramento, El Camino and I-80 store. Rigs of every shape, size and color showed up to show off their rigs so there was plenty of big tires to stand around and kick while telling stories with other fellow four wheelers.

Free hot dogs and hamburgers were served up while three different bands entertained the crowd throughout the day. An RTI ramp was set up to test the rigs' and drivers' abilities, but I think the best part of the day was when the junk cars were literally dragged out to the middle of the parking lot and it was a free for all "car crawl" instead of rock crawl.

Besides offering great deals throughout the store another focus of the get together was land use and access and the famous "land use buggy" Travis Carpenter's MFS buggy #4405 and the MFS crew were there to answer questions, talk about responsible land and trail use and show off their bad to the bone rig.

Nor Cal4Wheelers were also on hand supporting the BlueRibbon Coalition and demonstrating the PETT toilet system that will coming to a trail near you. CA4WDC was there as well to answer questions and support land use.

Hats off to a successful day and a chance to meet the crew at 4Wheel Parts.

Close All OHV Routes In The Eldorado?

LEGAL ACTION IS UNDERWAY TO CLOSE ALL OHV ROUTES IN THE ELDORADO NATIONAL FOREST.

WE NEED YOUR HELP.

The center for Sierra Nevada conservation, and center for biological diversity, plaintiffs, are asking the court to order the Eldorado National Forest Service (FS) closed to all OHV use until each route has gone through site specific analysis with public comment to determine its environmental acceptability before designation.

It has taken the FS 15 years to get this far without site specific analysis and it took the FS 15 years to complete the Rock Creek EA & EIS. The forest service doesn’t have the funds to undertake site specific analysis. There are provisions in the travel management plan stating that if adequate funds are not available to manage OHV routes they shall be closed.

California Enduro Riders Association (CERA) and myself along with California assoc. of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs are applying to the court for defendant-intervener status. We cannot let the FS be the sole defendants of our interests. Our legal interests in the action are not identical, and on many issues are contrary to the FS defendants’ interests, and we anticipate a need to present different information and legal arguments that might be presented by some or all defendants. We are particularly concerned about the prospect of settlement negotiation and wish to have a role in any possible settlement discussions. In settlement or formal litigation CERA and the OHV community typically presents different issues, arguments, and evidence than that presented by governmental agencies’ legal counsel. This reflects the fact that the Forest Service does not share the same ultimate objective in this, or any case, with CERA and the OHV Community. A ”loss” for the Forest Service simply changes the manner in which they conduct their never-ending yet ever-changing management duties.

These plaintiffs claim they are for the greater good and focus on adverse environmental impacts, claiming to be friends of nature. But their real agenda is to make sure OHV recreation gets eliminated. They use the kitchen sink approach, throwing every conceivable objection and obstacle at the proposed action to see what sticks. The Forest Service procedure always has weaknesses and if a judge agrees, as he has in the past, the FS will have to do it over again. The issue here is will the judge award the plaintiffs their requested relief, as you have seen at Carnegie, they often do.

The major issue here is all existing trails will be closed, and will remain closed until each trail goes through extensive environmental review before it’s designated open for use. We have always contended that all trails are open unless environmental review determined they should be closed either through public process or limited time emergency closure. This is a case of guilty unless proven innocent, verses innocent until proven guilty.

If the plaintiffs prevail this will be a precedent setting case and they will sue the Forest Service to make this the new nationwide policy and then go after BLM. Their friends in congress are now cutting off funds for trail related actives. NO FUNDS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW AND NO OPEN TRAILS IN ANY NATIONAL FOREST.

The Magnificent Slot Canyons Of Page Arizona

Page AZ is the place to be to see the magnificent slot canyons. These incredible formations are located just a few minutes outside of town at a place called Antelope Canyon. Guided tours are available in several locations in town or you can venture out on your own to the smaller side of the canyon that is on Navajo Nation land so there are fees to pay directly to the attendant in the parking lot; it is worth the cost!

We were pleasantly surprised that we had the place all to ourselves. The minute I slipped down into a small fissure that I discovered on top of the sandstone wash I was immediately drawn into the cavernous beauty and found myself practically running through the crevices to see more of what was around every corner.

I call this formation the Sphinx

The changing light overhead made for breathtaking colors and hues that illuminated off what appeared to be red sandstone. It's a photographers paradise and I highly recommend visiting this fantastic area.

Southwest Crawlfest 2010

I can't say enough about the Southwest Crawlfest held just outside Hurricane Utah; a few short miles from the city of St. George.

This event is a hit in my book and we will surely put it on our calendar for next year. There is no registration fee and the only thing they request is to purchase your dinner on Saturday night and buy raffle tickets for their outstanding list of goodies up for grabs.

Scenery and comraderie were some of the things on top of the list for entertainment during the weekend including trails that range from mild to wild. We saw every sort of 4 wheel drive vehicle out there enjoying the routes regardless of their shape, motor or tire size. All were welcome.

Last but not least, Crawlfest is a benefit event for the land use organizations and the money raised, less expenses etc., will be sent to them including the BlueRibbon Coalition.

Thanks to all who were involved in putting this wonderful event togther and I'm certain this will continue to be a success and grow bigger year after year.

POCATELLO, ID (January 22) - On January 15, 2010, Southern Region Deputy Regional Forester Jerome Thomas adopted the recommendation of the internal Appeal Reviewing Officer and denied the Upper Tellico OHV Area appeals submitted by the Southern Four Wheel Drive Association (SFWDA), United Four Wheel Drive Associations (UFWDA), and the BlueRibbon Coalition (BRC). "We are disappointed but not surprised by this outcome," observed Jay Bird of the Rescue Tellico Committee and Past President of SFWDA. "This was a mandatory step in an ongoing process, and it would be unusual for an agency that has been for years locked in on the outcome of closing Tellico to reverse course at the last step of the administrative process," added Greg Mumm, BRC Executive Director. "We remain committed to restoring some form of meaningful vehicle recreation at Tellico, will carefully review the appeal decisions, and will take appropriate next steps," Mumm concluded.

The New Year! Yeah, it's here already and what an awesome start. I'm so looking forward to the beginning of the rock competitions and events.

To kick things off, we'll be headed to Winter Fun Fest in Grass Valley CA, January 15-17th.

The last week of January we'll be headed out to St. George Utah for the Southwest Crawl Fest. This is going to be an awesome event in the most beautiful red rock country around. Then we'll be off to Quartzite for a little rock hounding for a few days.

The beginning of February will find us headed down to Johnson Valley for the famous King of the Hammers race. It will be a week of wheelin', visiting and spreading the land use message to all who will listen.

Whew! Then we come home in time to go to CA4WDC annual Convention in Sacramento CA on February 19-21 at the Double Tree Hotel.

Hollister Hills Fun With Friends

I like to go to new places and I was pleasantly surprised when we got the chance to hang out with old and new friends at Hollister Hills OHV area. It was my first time to the area so I didn't know what to expect.

The weather was perfect with bright blue skies filled with puffy clouds and views galore from the hill tops. Did I mention the great wheelin to be had there? It's mostly gullies and trenches but still lots of fun and a great place to test out your suspension and flex capabilities.

Hollister has a riding area specifically for motorcycles and another for 4 wheelers so they stay out of each others way. It was really a fun place and I look forward to going again.

MERIDA, Mexico -- High-ranking U.S., Canadian and Mexican officials signed an agreement here Saturday to collaborate on protecting wilderness across North America.

The memorandum of understanding, signed during the WILD9 international wilderness congress, is the first continental wilderness agreement.

"This agreement will make it easier to exchange successful experiences and facilitate monitoring and the training of human resources, as well as financing projects that will protect and recover wilderness areas," Mexican President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa said Friday in his welcome to the congress, which meets every three to four years.

The agreement, a year and a half in the making, will allow land managers on opposite sides of the border to more easily work together on management challenges and opportunities, regardless of jurisdiction, officials said. For example, federal land managers will no longer be restricted in their collaboration with state or provincial managers across the border.

Mexico's participation in the MOU is part of a multipronged effort to step up wilderness protection at home, said Ernesto Enkerlin-Hoeflich, who heads the Commission for Natural Protected Areas for United Mexican States, a government agency.

The Calderón administration has been pushing for a wilderness law, similar to the one adopted by the United States in 1964, and the new measure has wide support among federal lawmakers in Mexico, he said. Currently, the only wilderness area in Mexico is the El Carmen Wilderness, created by CEMEX Corp. It borders Big Bend National Park in Texas.

"We are coming late, but I'm sure we're going to pick up fast," Enkerlin-Hoeflich said.

Protecting wilderness is especially important now, given the crucial role that intact forests, grasslands and other ecosystems play in sequestering heat-trapping carbon dioxide, noted Sally Collins, director of the U.S. Agriculture Department's new Office of Ecosystem Services and Markets.

Collins' office promotes the nonextractive benefits of natural systems, such as providing clean water, preventing erosion and helping to regulate the Earth's climate. Collins signed the document in place of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who could not attend the WILD9 meeting.

For its part, the National Park Service plans to bring long-languishing wilderness proposals "off the shelf" and encourage Congress to adopt new wilderness measures, added Jon Jarvis, director of the National Park Service.

Sam Hamilton, head of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which manages several wildlife refuges along the U.S.-Mexico border, said enhancing cooperation across national boundaries hopefully will ensure greater connectivity between protected areas.

"Wilderness forms the essential core of protected areas, but wilderness alone will not suffice," Hamilton said. "These areas must be connected."

Hamilton and his co-signers acknowledged that the border fence recently erected along long segments of the U.S.-Mexico border is a hindrance to that connectivity and will pose challenges to achieving the goals of the new agreement. Enkerlin-Hoeflich spoke of Mexico's "deep concern" about what he called "the wall" and expressed hope that the wilderness MOU will focus further attention on the need to create cross-boundary passageways for wildlife.

"We have to make the best of what we've got," Hamilton said.

• A look at the federal agencies who control our public lands by administering these laws;

• A listing of the some of the organizations that SEMA works with to protect the rights of off-road enthusiasts;

Urban Assault Fall Haul & Crawl

The first annual Fall Haul & Crawl was held at the Urban Assault OHV Combat Zone in Oroville CA October 17-18.

One of the highlights of the weekend was when Mr. Silva (aka Mr. S) and some of his students from Nevada Union High School showed up with their rig that was built as a class project, dubbed "Class Act" this rig was something to see!

I have to say that those students are lucky have Mr. S as their teacher!

With the help of his students who spotted him through the courses he put on a great show considering this was his first competition and the maiden voyage for the buggy.

The excitement piqued in the crowd when the buggy caught on fire but with the help of some of the W.E. Rock crew they were able to get things under control in no time without much damage.

The event was also a fund raiser and a driver auction, which allowed the highest bidder to ride with their favorite driver on the course. All the proceeds went to Crawlin' for Crohn's.

Driver Justin Hall survived the illness and is here with us to spread the word about this awful disease.

Other competitors included some local talent and W.E. Rock pro's which gave the crowds a thrill as they watched the carnage on the courses with names like the Mine Field, Wall of Shame, Agent Orange and the ultimate challenge, the Terminator.

Danny Harp, the local favorite, descends one of the challenging obstacles in what looks to be a front end roll over waiting to happen. Piloting his daily driver he took second place trailing by only eight points against Mr. S and his tricked out rock buggy. Way to go Danny, maybe next time!

We all just have to be patient and wait for the season opener which is slated for March 2010. It will be a W.E. Rock Western National series with dozens of teams competing. So don't miss out and join us at the Urban Assault OHV Combat Zone in Oroville CA!

Off Road Expo

The fall Off Road Expo was a great success. Hundreds if not thousands of people showed up at the show and they weren't just doing the looky-lou stuff, they were opening their wallets and spending money with the several vendors that were there to show off their stuff.

There were goodies galore for all sorts of off road enthusiasts including RC races and booths, BMX stunt riders, and crazy dirtbike demonstrations. There were plenty of big toys to look over as well.

Be sure and put this one on the calendar for next year, you won't be disappointed!

It's not a game; it's about our access to public lands and waterways. We're launching The Access Army, and we want you. We are about wheeled access; nationally; for all of us. We are helping the standing organized recreation groups and organizations with our informal coalition. We are FIGHTING BACK.

At this point there are no dues; few rules; and no meetings -- just battle. The Access Army is a non-partisan, non-violent, multi-organizational grassroots coalition led by a Joint Chiefs of Staff, comprised of soldiers from all walks of life and recreational pursuits, with the sole purpose of fighting back against unnecessary land and water closures, restrictions to access, and theft of our freedoms.We are virtual -- we are harnessing the power of the Internet and social networking to save trails, keep our motorsports alive and defend our freedoms .

We fully support and belong to all those organization recreation groups out there now -- national, regional, state and local. Jeff Mello educates young drivers - right on Jeff!

Rockcrawling Legend Jeff Mello Educates High School Students Eight-time champion educates students on driver control and responsible OHV use.

BFGoodrich driver Jeff Mello of Rage 4th racing, took a day out of his busy schedule to speak to driver’s education students at Heritage High School in Brentwood California. With 100 rocksports victories under his belt, Jeff’s driving expertise and knowledge helped to keep 105 driver’s education students on the edge of their seats during three one and a half hour presentations in a lesson they will never forget.

Jeff began each presentation introducing the students to the various types of 4x4 competitions that he has been involved in, from rock crawling to rock racing. With video clips from the 2009 King of the Hammers race and various other competitions, Jeff compared and contrasted driving in competition and driving on the street with a firm message that racing has no place outside of competition. A strong emphasis was also placed on driver control and awareness in both competition and in everyday driving.

To make sure the message really sunk in with the students, Jeff also brought three vehicles to have on display at the high school: Jason Scherer’s buggy that helped him win the famous King of the Hammers race in 2009, Travis Carpenter’s MFS “Land-use” KOH buggy, and Jeff’s original competition rig. Students were allowed to examine and sit in the three vehicles as Jeff talked about safety equipment on the competition rigs, and how they differed from normal passenger cars.

Finally the presentation was finished with a talk about responsible OHV use and trail stewardship. Each student was also given an autographed “The Kings of Rock” poster at the end of the presentation.

Jeff is one of the winning-most drivers in the sport with 100 rocksport victories under his belt. With his wife Julie and their two children, the Mello family spends an average of 70 days a year on the dirt recreating with their OHV’s The couple’s commitment to the sport is evident through presentations such as this, and membership in many land-use organizations. Both are 40 year members of the Contra Costa Jeepers.

The Friends of Eldorado National Forest holds its Second Annual National Public Lands Day Work Party

On Saturday September 26th, the Friends of Eldorado National Forest worked alongside the National Forest Service cutting brush along the sides of forest road 9N22Y in the Eldorado National Forest . This road was possibly slated for closure during the route designation project two years ago. Due to work with Duane Nelson, the Placerville district Ranger and the Forest Supervisor back in November 2007, the road was shown to have value to the public. The end of the road has a foot trail down to a spectacular overlook of the Cosumnes River .

Over the years the brush has overgrown the road in many places and prohibited vehicle travel. Thirty two members of the Friends of Eldorado National Forest came from as far as the Bay Area and worked with Mike Villalobos of the Forest Service. Guided by the direction of Ron Hancock and Duane Nelson, they cut, trimmed and removed the brush from the road. Logs and rocks were also removed from the road surface as well as blocking an illegal trail to protect the hillside from further erosion. By the end of the day the 1.9 mile long road was once again open to all vehicles, something that hasn’t been possible for years.

Cathy Bounds of the Forest Service also allowed Friends of Eldorado National Forest access to the Capps Crossing campground which is closed after Labor Day weekend. The close proximity of the campground made it an ideal staging point as well as a place where the organization could hold a BBQ to feed their workers. They also celebrated with a birthday cake as the group turned 2 years old a few days earlier.

Fall Mud & Crawl at Urban Assault

Skies were cloudy and the temps were mild for the fun filled event held at Surplus City in Oroville CA.

The Fall Mud & Crawl at the Urban Assault OHV Combat Zone in Oroville CA was a blast!
The courses are set up for easy spectator viewing of both the mud bog and rock crawl courses that dot the property.

The course and obstacle names are fitting for the atmosphere at this military surplus mecca. Names like Terminator, Mine Field, The Wall of Shame, Army Truck and the Chariot certainly live up to their names as they can impose metal mashing carnage on their victims.

From "camp to comp" is how I would describe the layout of this fabulous facility that can easily accomodate RV's, trailers, fifth wheels and tent campers.

The Feather river is very near by and we were treated with an extra special show of salmon sailing out of the water while watching the color filled sunset in the background.

W.E. Rock in Oroville

Surplus City in Oroville CA certainly knows how to put on a good show with a man made rock crawling course that had no mercy on competitors and their well built rigs that showed up for the W.E. Rock event.

Tons of concrete and crazy sizes of military culvert pipes helped to create a course that challenged the best of the best and will be the talk of the town for quite awhile.

Surprisingly, the blazing triple digit heat didn't dampen the spirit of the spectators who showed up in force to take in the wild ride and rolls that happened in front of their eyes.

Here's some of the action packed shots I was able to snap.

This was my first time to the NorCal Rock Races. I have to say that being right there on the course was pretty darn exciting just because of the horsepower and the "race" factor. Unlike rockcrawling events that I cover this fast paced full on throttle sport is exciting and fast paced. I enjoyed it thoroughly and look forward to next years line up at Prairie City.

Del and I had a grand time touring Mendocino a couple of weeks ago and we have yet to slow down. We're finally sitting down for some catch up time behind the computer screen!

I would like to thank the special, and not to mention fun, couple at Liquid Fusion www.liquidfusionkayak.com for taking us on our first kayak trip on the Noyo River.

We were treated to a leisurely paddle down to the marina and past some historical logging remains from a bygone day.

Their extensive knowledge of the area and the critters that call the area home was fascinating to hear about and the picture taking was phenominal.

They offer anywhere from mild to wild tours including a sun set bird paddle, cruising the wild, and a wet and wild coastal cruise. They also offer kayaking classes for those of you who get hooked and would like to do more.

I had to share this as sometimes we get frustrated and lose sight of what we're doing and why.

So, how do we measure success in the off road pro access arena? Want to know something? This was a major bother to me just a short time ago.

It seems we shout, work, volunteer, and move forward with a resolve every day, but do not see much feedback. Our resolve often is met with a few catcalls or negative responses. However we move on. I think that those of us who are moved to keep these trails open for everyone just keep pounding on, it is those on the fringe I think we need to assure. You see success seems to be measured in small ways a lot round here.

Recently I joined Facebook; I soon noticed Del Albright was a member so I hooked up with him as friends. Now I get his daily reports on what is going on in his life. While he recently was on the border to border run and posted a lot of comments. I was at work talking about some friends of the trip and soon a few guys were asking how he could do so much trail without roads. This was soon a discussion about public lands and how we are battling to keep them open. About pro access organizations and how the future was a day to day battle to keep these trails and areas open. That met with a few interesting comments but bottom line is that yesterday I had one of those guys come up and ask what he could do to help.

I know, it seems small, but each time we win someone over, each time we plant a seed, each time we get someone to acknowledge our battle we have a success. We could measure it by huge Land Issue successes in court, but those are not the biggest successes we have. Oh they are huge on the horizon, but each of those were possible because we reached someone who had the talent to see that issue through.

We are not all lawyers, we are not all writers, some of us are simple Adopt A Trail workers, some of us just go to public meetings and clap in the background. There is a job for everyone. You know that guy who loves to camp 3 cubicles down, he could be the next guy to start volunteering somewhere and be a leader in that area. But we need a small success first, we need to get him the message in a way he understands. Maybe a weekend on trail with a small talk somewhere about Access rights. Then we need to talk to the guy who fishes those mountain streams, the hunters, the hikers, we are all users of the public lands.

The small successes are those that matter, they set us up for the big ones.

Let us take huge pride in the small ones, and realize these are the ones that we need most, each new member of our community is a number, and we need these numbers to grow. Go out and help build this number one new mind at a time.

The Letter from the Boss

Dear employees:

As the CEO of this organization, I have resigned myself to the fact that Barack Obama is our President and that our taxes and government fees will increase in a BIG way. To compensate for these increases, our prices would have to increase by about 10%. But since we cannot increase our prices right now due to the dismal state of the economy, we will have to lay off sixty of our employees instead. This has really been bothering me, since I believe we are family here and I didn't know how to choose who would have to go.

So, this is what I did. I walked through our parking lots and found sixty 'Obama' bumper stickers on our employees' cars and have decided these folks will be the ones to let go. I can't think of a more fair way to approach this problem.. They voted for change, they should get it.

I will see the rest of you at the annual company picnic.

Please give this the widest distribution possible and contact your Reps! It's the ammo, not the guns....I've said for a long time that they wouldn't go for your guns, they'd go for your ammo... guns have a Constitutional protection. Ammo does not.

Heads up to all of you who swore to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign AND domestic. Let your state Legislatures know that we do not want this bill passed, and petition them to vote no on this bill. We should keep after them until the bill is closed by bombarding them with e-mails, phone calls, and letters.Get to all your politicians to get to work and NOT LET THIS HAPPEN!!!

There's a fairly new off-road website out there offering all kinds of OHV chat and tech talk. Street 2 Dirt has tons of good stuff to offer you no matter what you ride or drive (quad, 4x4, buggy, rail, bike, etc.). Del and I have started posting up some land use info there as well. So trail-saving is on their list. Cool.
